We’re giving back to the League For Animal Welfare in Amelia, OH, from September 1-15 through our Buy One Give One program. This no-kill shelter has been saving lives for 70 years – yes, you read that right – 70 years of believing in second chances for animals in need. We are thrilled to be supporting them and we appreciate the tireless efforts of their volunteers to improve the the lives of the animals in their care. Here’s LFAW in their own voice.

What is involved in keeping a shelter-based rescue going? Our shelter currently has space to care for 40 dogs.  We are a managed intake shelter, meaning that we can only take in animals as space allows.  Our goal is to stay as full as we can, helping the most animals possible.  To do so, we pull the majority of our dogs from county shelters as we space opens up.  Pulling these dogs frees valuable space in the county shelters to accommodate incoming animals while not having to euthanize them to make room.  The dogs are given another chance in our shelter to find their forever homes.  As space permits, we are then able to take in owner surrendered pets and strays.

What are some of the things your group is known for? 

Next year will be our 70th year as a no-kill organization.  Potential adopters are frequently surprised when they visit our shelter, many of them commenting about how clean our facility is and how happy the animals are.  Our dedicated staff provide the highest level of care for the dogs, including clean runs, fresh bedding and quality veterinary care.  Our adoption counselors work with each potential adopter to find the right fit for their home and lifestyle, ensuring each adoption is a win-win for both the humans and the dogs.  Our volunteers give the dogs lots of love and attention, helping prepare them to become part of a family and home.  Our animal trainer provides guidance to our staff and volunteers on addressing challenging behaviors, as well as identifying socialization and enrichment activities.

What are some of the more challenging moments in rescue and how did you get through them?
It can be a roller coaster. Seeing the animals come into our shelter broken, scared, traumatized & sick hurts so bad! But watching them learn to love & be loved because of the amazing work of the medical staff, shelter staff & volunteers is truly humbling to be a part of. Then, they get adopted,  so our hearts hurt again, but it’s a good hurt!

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?
Pretty much the same as above. The main “job” of the volunteers of The League For Animal Welfare is to socialize (snuggle) and  to enrich (play with) the League animals. I can find other “jobs” that best fit your skillset & desires, but being hands on with animals is Number One!
