Supporting underdogs at Fresno Bully Rescue

by Carole Feeny |

There’s nothing that delights us more than to support rescue groups who are truly making a difference in their communities. Fresno Bully Rescue takes commitment to a whole new level by not only saving the lives of deserving bully breed dogs but also by educating the public about the wonderful companions that these darling dogs make. Their mission statement reads: “FBR’s job is to provide a healthy and loving temporary home while we look for forever homes for our bullies. In addition, FBR is committed to promoting responsible ownership of bully breeds, fighting against breed discrimination, spaying and neutering pets, reporting dog fighting, and demonstrating to the community that bully breeds are loyal, loving, and wonderful forever companions.”

FBR is the recipient of our Buy One Give One collar and leash program from 9/16-9/30. We asked their volunteers some questions about FBR to get people familiar with their group. We know you will be inspired to support them after you take a read below!

What is involved in keeping your rescue going? We house approx 40 dogs at our shelter at all times, with a dozen or so additional dogs in foster homes. We are one of the only breed-specific shelter facilities in the entire state so running a shelter facility is a lot of work. Volunteer and community support is imperative to our existence. Most of our dogs are pulled from city & county shelters where their time is limited due to space. We also take in some owner surrenders and emergency rescues.

What are some of the things your group is known for? We are known for being out in our community a lot! We try to always be as present as possible to continue our mission to spread positive awareness for the breed.

Describe some of the more challenging moments in rescue and how you/the other volunteers got through it. One of the biggest challenges we’ve ever faced was having to fight to build our new shelter facility. We faced some discrimination and push back because of the breed we deal with. When working with “pit bulls” everything we have, we have to work 10x harder for because we work with the underdog! The community and our supporters really stepped in and helped us win over the county in letting us move forward with construction. It was amazing to see how much we meant to our community!

What is the most rewarding part about rescuing? What would you say to others who are considering fostering or volunteering for a group like yours? Sometimes you might feel overwhelmed- like your work is never enough – but seeing the positive transformation for even just one dog makes it all worth it. Fosters and volunteers are true life-savers. Rescues like ours cannot survive with out them!

Let us know anything else you’d like to share with us. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is coming up October 21st! And here is our latest promotional video highlighting the building of our facility.
