Stephanie saw a picture of an impossibly cute white 6 month old puppy with ridiculously huge ears on a TV news program featuring the Humane Society of NW Indiana in Miller Beach.

Tell Us About the Moment When You Knew that You Two Were Meant for Each Other.

We had discussed getting a dog at some time, but always said ”now is not the right time.” Well, friends told us it’s never ”THE” right time, just do it; so we finally succumbed and went to the shelter to see ”Larry.” After spending a half hour on the floor playing with him we knew we were hooked, and on a Friday the Thirteenth nine and a half years ago brought him home, where he became our Shemya.

How Has Your Hero Changed Your Life?

It is impossible for us to overstate the profound effect Shemya has had on our lives. We were overwhelmed by his ”issues” when he first came home. (He had been abused and mistreated, was found by a policeman tied to a tree with no food or water on a cold winter day). But he has taught us the importance of love and patience in overcoming past obstacles. It took years for him to become more accepting to strangers (especially his fear of young boys, how sad is that) – but he is to us the most loving family member imaginable. (And he loves his newer, younger, brother Gizmo)
