Where Did You Find Your Dog?

Sarge is a 6 yr old cancer survivor. He was saved by Bully Breed Rescue back in 2010 off of the euthanasia list at New York City Animal Care and Control. Sarge was then adopted but unfortunately after 3 yrs with his previous family, he was diagnosed with mass cell cancer. Luckily, this was caught in time and was treated by surgically removing his tumor. The cancer had not spread and we are told has little chance of returning. Shortly thereafter, unfortunate circumstance came upon his then family and he was returned to Bully Breed Rescue’s care. Once a BBR dog, always a BBR dog. Sarge then chose his forever home with Bully Breed Rescue’s Direction of Education and Events.

Tell Us About the Moment When You Knew that You Two Were Meant for Each Other.

Sarge definitely chose us. One day, I went to take him out for his afternoon walk (not unusual) and when I came around the corner with the President of the rescue, he began to hop and bark excitedly in his kennel. The President, turned and looked at me in surprise and said ”I’ve never heard him bark before”. I opened the kennel, knelt down and he put his big head in my hands, I looked into his beautiful big brown eyes and knew he was coming home. I spoke to my husband, who said since we had two dogs at home around the same age and 4 cats, it was important to ensure Sarge got to know them. So we took time to do proper introductions and long group walks. Sarge joined our family like he had always lived there. He now lives in the country with Boomer (Labrador) and Chewie (Beagle mix) and 4 cats!

How Has Your Hero Changed Your Life?

Sarge has changed our lives in many ways, we have a full house but a complete one. He has been actively training to be a therapy dog and will assist his mom, the Director of Education with outreach programs hopefully debunking misconceptions regarding bully breeds. Sarge has also become the face of a partnership between BBR and Zen By Alexa Rae and you can find his face on his very own bangle!
