Each month, we ask our shelter of the month partners to share stories and topics close to their hearts. Sabrina Wilkerson, Foster Coordinator for our September shelter of the month partner, Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego, talks about her passion for fostering and why she puts her heart on the line to save lives. Sabrina is also the force behind the Facebook page Foster Mamas, “a passionate community and a forum for fosters all over the world to network, show support, share experiences, exchange ideas and be part of a special camaraderie.”
In 2010, I was ready to get involved and give back. We got our first foster and I was hooked. I had finally discovered my passion! Since that time, we have fostered about 50 little ones and I plan on fostering for the rest of my life. We joined the Foster Failure Club with our 17th foster, Cleo… she was definitely meant to be ours; she has completed our family. Fosters are the heart of any rescue organization and one of my goals is to share the joy that fostering brings; the unconditional love that the dogs so happily give, the amazing personalities that we meet, the way we learn something new from each and every one of them that cross our path. They are all so special and when they are adopted and it’s time to let them go to their forever home, it’s not always easy to say goodbye, but it warms my heart to know that I played a small role in their life. And now we can open up our home to the next foster baby who needs us.
While fostering did save Max and Cleo’s lives, it has also changed me, my life, and the way I go about being in the world forever. Fostering is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I’m really proud to be a Foster Mama and hope that sharing my passion will help to inspire and encourage others to get involved and make a difference.
