BOGO Spotlight: Ruff Dog Rescue Northeast

by Carole Feeny |

We are excited to support Ruff Dog Rescue Northeast as our BOGO recipient from September 16-30, 2017. Their tagline says it all about the work they are committed to doing: “Turning Ruff Starts Into New Beginnings.” This Thompson, PA based group describes themselves this way: “We are a group of friends and long time rescuers, working together for years. We have seen both the good & bad in rescue and have decided to band together to capitalize on the good and work for ONLY the well being of the dogs, not the glory. While we are an ALL dog rescue, our hearts are still with our pitties! We aim to save dogs not only from kill shelters but rescue them from the abusive, neglectful & horrid situations our precious pups find themselves in way too often. We will never turn our back on a dog in need!”

We asked volunteer Allison Leonard a few questions about Ruff Dog Rescue Northeast – read her response below and you will see why we are so happy to support them!

What is involved in keeping a shelter-based rescue going?

Being that our rescue is run out of the Presidents home it involves a great deal of work. Tere (President of RDRNE) shares her home with her 3 personal dogs and a revolving door of puppies and adult dogs. If puppies aren’t in the house they are out in the barn with the bigger dogs. We currently have 6 adult dogs in our rescue. Puppies, well, we can have anywhere from 10-25, just depends on the time of the year and the situations down south. We pull the majority of dogs from the south. Tere works tirelessly to vaccinate all dogs, socialize all of them and teach them basic manners. She does this work the majority of the time on her own. We have a very strong volunteer network that try to get out and help as often as possibly. Taking care of over 40 dogs isn’t something most people could handle but Tere is a rock star and makes the rescue what it is today, amazing! Teamwork is the main thing that keeps this rescue going. Always trying to help Tere out and always networking is what really keeps a rescue running.

What are some of the things your group is known for?
I’d have to say our rescue is known for how close we stay with our adopters and our rdrne alumni dogs. We pride ourselves on keeping a very strong network with all adopters and if any sort of problem is to arise we want to make sure all families feel comfortable contacting someone with whom they’ve worked with in the group.
What is the most rewarding part about volunteering? What would you say to others who are considering volunteering for a group like yours?

Oh, I could go on and on about this one. The most rewarding part of rescue is seeing a dog go to a wonderful home. Knowing the love this dog will now have and that it will never be stuck in a scary situation again. All because Ruff Dog pulled this dog, it’s fate could have been so much worse. PLEASE go out and volunteer, please just go walk a dog, pet a cat, cuddle some puppies. Volunteering is the most rewarding thing I do. I’ve been volunteering for over 6 years now and not one day out of those years did I say “why am I helping?” I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, I’ve been crushed, I’ve watched an elderly dog be assisted to the bridge and all the while each and every experience has molded me into the person I am today. I also have had my son, now 8, doing rescue with me. He wants to be a veterinarian! The impact such a small thing can have on a child is amazing.

From the president of the rescue: “Running a rescue with a facility is a 24/7 365 day a week job with our rescue president living on premise providing 24 hour care to our sick animals and those that have recovered. Our rescue team works tirelessly to find these animals well-deserved homes and as a team, we have been very successful homing 365 animals in 2016 and will surpass that number in 2017.  Our rescue houses anywhere from 30 to 45 animals on a daily basis depending upon the need and all of those animals have been rescued from dire life or death and neglectful situations. We provide solace to animals from the south, working hand-in-hand with our sister Rescue, Ruff Dog Rescue Georgia as well as animals from our local area and surrounding the northeast.”

Let us know anything else you’d like to share with us.
I’m honored to be a part of RDRNE. I love the people I work with, I love helping families find the perfect match for their home, I love helping to bring awareness and education to the bully breed specifically. Ruff Dog is primarily a pitbull rescue, we strive to education and train people about this breed and how incredibly wonderful they are.
