Bella The Unlovable Aussie

by Carole Feeny |

  • : Bella came to my home scared, alone, and unloved by all those she had ever known. She was dropped off at our local veterinary clinic and my mother, an employee for Animal Aid Vermilion Area (AAVA), just happened to be there with other dogs that were kept by the rescue. She barked at every person she met and refused to leave her kennel. We took her home for a few nights until an appointment to put her down could be made. She was to be euthanized because she had severe fearful aggression issues due to two years of abuse by her previous owners but I vowed not the let her previous owners win, I would save my sweet girl. Bella was a two year old red and white Australian Shepherd and I fell in love immediately. She never made me nervous and stood by my side for five years after attaching herself to me. I spent those five years loving and cherishing every moment I had, knowing that it could end in an instant if she bit someone out of fear. Unfortunately between November 29, 2011 and May 10, 2017 she had bitten three people and attempted to bite three more. Her fear and aggression became worse with age, contrary to what we had hoped and believed would happen. After attempting to bite myself and both my parents in the span of a week, I eventually had to make the hardest decision of my life. Her abusive first owners won and I lost the greatest blessing I could have hoped for. I am proud to have given her the five years that I did and she will always hold an extra special place in my heart.
  • : I first knew that I would save Bella from the moment I saw her scared in the kennel in the backseat of my mother's car. I put my hand against the kennel and she nosed my hand instead of barking at me like she had everyone else. It was truly confirmed a few days later when she crawled out of her kennel, which had been open the entire time, and met me across the living room. From that moment on, until I walked her to the Rainbow Bridge, Bella and I were inseparable. The bond that we had was a once in a lifetime chance and I am so glad that Bella chose me.
