Tell Us About the Moment When You Knew that You Two Were Meant for Each Other.

A year ago, when I was diagnosed with two unrelated cancers, my understanding of life and rules of existence got sucked into a black hole of surgeries, chemotherapies, radiation and survival statistics. I felt sorry for myself, I was angry, I sulked every day. I cursed everything and everyone. I didn't deserve this. I was only 35 years old. Then, one night, I was laying in my bed, looking at my dog Sunny, peacefully sleeping on her bed. Then it hit me. She was born way after I was born. She will die way before I die. She will have only lived a fraction of my life. But there she was, enjoying every day as if death wasn't even on the horizon.

How Has Your Hero Changed Your Life?

Sunny lives in the moment and doesn't worry about next year or the year after. She loves her balls and plastic bottles and tearing a cardboard box apart. She frolics in the river, rolling rocks around. She tries to catch birds and squirrels and doesn't pout when she never succeeds. That night I told myself that I would try with all my heart to live every day just for that particular day. Nothing more and nothing less. Some days are better than others. I keep trying. And Sunny keeps reminding me. Sunny was a winner in our Lessons from my rescue dog contest! (July 2014)
