We asked FetchFuel CEO Andrew Morrison a few questions about nutritional supplements for dogs and he shared the following with us:
PBC: What made you start FetchFuel?
FF: The reason we have launched our line of food enhancements and supplements is that we feel strongly that it is better to increase the nutrition that we give our dogs, than to do nothing at all. It is our way of ensuring that we had products to give our dogs made with high quality, safe and healthy ingredients. We want to "stack the deck' in our dogs' favor, knowing that today's dog food often falls short on delivering all the nutrients to give optimal health and wellness to your dog, especially as middle-aged and senior dogs. We have so many wonderful success stories of dogs with improved mobility, healthier skin & coat and greater interest and appetite for food when they are given FetchFuel.
PBC: Aging dogs seem like ideal candidates for FetchFuel. Can you let us know some of the physical changes dogs face as they become seniors ?
FF: The ASPCA identifies a few critical areas for adult and senior dogs: Dogs begin to show visible age-related changes at about seven to 12 years of age. There are metabolic, immunologic and body composition changes, too. Some of these may be unavoidable while others can be managed with diet. When feeding your older dog, the main objective should be to maintain health and optimum body weight, slow development of chronic disease and minimize diseases that may already be present. As your dog ages, health issues may arise including deterioration of skin and coat, loss of muscle mass, more frequent intestinal problems, arthritis, obesity, dental problems and decreased ability to fight off infection.
PBC: What are some of the top issues you’ve seen for people who have aging dogs and how have you addressed them?
FF:
(1) reduced mobility (most likely from arthritis, ache joints, etc.)
(2) impacted skin and coat (loss off hair, itchy skin, growths, etc.)
(3) reduced appetite (which has a significant impact on feeding and proper nutrition if a senior dog slows its eating)
(4) intestinal problems (sensitive stomachs)
We have included Glucosamine, to help with rebuilding of joint cartilage. We include Omega fatty acids (omega 3, 6 and 9), as they act as an anti-inflammatory on the joints and aid in absorption of these rich nutrients. In addition they aid in helping to keep their skin and coat healthy. We have included additional vitamins and minerals (vitamin A, Bs, C, D, E, calcium, zinc, and biotin) to support not only joints, but skin & coat, heart, eyes, bones and teeth (https://fetchfuel.com/what-is-in-fetchfuel/). Lastly, we crafted FetchFuel with 100% vegetarian ingredients with the goal of avoiding many food allergies and appealing to all dogs, even those with sensitive stomachs.
PBC: How long does it take to see results from using FetchFuel?
FF: Within 1 week we have seen for some senior dogs a resurgence of their appetite. Many senior dogs loose interest in eating, yet eating all their food is critical in delivering proper nutrition. Typically within 2 to 4 weeks the appearance of skin and coat improves-looking healthier and shinier. Mobility changes typically take a little longer to see (4 to 6 weeks) - the benefits have come in the form of greater interest in being active and doing activities that they have not done in the recent past (1, 2 and in some cases 3 years).
