BOGO Spotlight: RESCUEDohio

by Carole Feeny |

We are excited to announce that RESCUEDohio is our BOGO recipient from November 1st-15th, 2017.  RESCUEDohio was founded on August 1, 2015, by a group of dedicated animal lovers in the central Ohio area. The founders came from various different vocational backgrounds, but all have one thing in common: the passion to save dogs. Before starting RESCUEDohio, they were previously involved in different aspects of rescue, including fostering, fundraising, coordinating and training. The mission of this group is to help find homes for unwanted and abandoned dogs and to advocate for the rights of all animals everywhere.

We asked Leslie Walker to tell us more about the great work this organization of dedicated volunteers does:

What is involved in keeping RESCUEDohio going? (How many adoptable dogs are in your program? Where do your dogs come from?)

We have approximately 100 dogs and puppies in RESCUEDohio rescued from mainly rural Ohio and KY shelters. We do also accept owner surrenders.

What are some of the things your group is known for?

We are known in Central Ohio to have one of the best-managed rescues around. We take pride in screening for great homes for our dogs as well as excellent vet care. We also help spay and neuter dogs in the community whose owners can't afford to spay and neuter.

Describe some of the more challenging moments in rescue and how you/the other volunteers got through it.

Seeing animals abused and neglected is heartbreaking but when we can see them come out the other side and find their happy ever after it is so rewarding and we can say once again "this is why we do what we do".

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

Making a difference for those that have no voice of their own. We have saved almost 600 lives the last 2 years. We made a difference.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering for a group like yours?

Try it, saving lives is the most rewarding feeling ever. Not everyone can foster but you can transport, fundraise, work events, process applications. If you don't have time for any of those you can donate.

We are a completely foster based rescue. All of our dogs are in foster homes. We rely on adoption fees and public and community support via donations and fundraising to pay our medical bills which run about $20,000 a month.
