Supporting Underdogs at Peppermint Pig Rescue

We’re a bit blown away by Peppermint Pig Animal Rescue in Cincinnati. They are a foster-based rescue that not only operates a thrift store to generate funds for their animals, but also they give back to K9 units in the surrounding counties AND all of this is done 100% by volunteers! That’s just the sort of rescue group we are excited to help in any way we can. As a beneficiary of our Buy One, Give One program from April 1-15, PPAR gets a chance to stock up on much needed supplies of collars and leashes with YOUR help. Plus, when they promote their adoptable dogs in photos, the cheerful and bright colors of PBC will make them all that more attractive to potential adopters!

We asked them a few questions to get our supporters familiar with their efforts and operations. We hope you will be inspired by their commitment to the animals in their care and the efforts they are making to save lives.

What is involved in keeping a foster-based rescue going? How many adoptable dogs are in your program? Where do your dogs come from?

Established together in 2006, Peppermint Pig Thrift & Gift operates solely to support Peppermint Pig Animal RescueWe are a 100% non-profit 501(c)(3), 100% volunteer operated, no-kill animal rescue. 100% of the proceeds from our thrift store go directly towards the rescue and care of animals in need. Our Thrift store operates to bridge the gap between our low adoption fees and the cost of vetting and care we provide the animals we rescue. Currently, we have 18 animals for adoption but we have had as many as 55-60. We save dogs from euthanasia lists from local kill shelters, assist other shelter/rescue organizations when they are at or past capacity and an occasional owner surrender from our community.

What are some of the things your group is known for?

We are a NO KILL RESCUE. We have a LIFETIME COMMITMENT to our animals. We often take on special needs cases or dogs needing surgery.  It is always about the animal and their needs. We operate a Thrift and Gift store run 100% by volunteers to help support our rescue mission.  100% of the proceeds goes to help the animals.

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering? What would you say to others who are considering volunteering for a group like yours?

The most challenging part is the day-to-day apathy and irresponsibility of pet ownership.  It is EVERY day.  There is never a day off.  The overall belief that pets are disposable is something that is hard to comprehend. Another challenge is just the miseducation or misconceptions about certain dog breeds, why or why not people spay/neuter their pets, and the misperception that if a pet is in a rescue/shelter, there must be something wrong with the pet.  The way we get through all the challenges is by celebrating finding each of them forever homes and hearing about how their new rescue enhanced their new forever home and forever family.

Let us know anything else about PPAR.

We give back to the community! Take a look at how we support K9 units in our surrounding areas. Sponsoring a PPAR animal is easy with our Spay it Forward campaign. We live for and LOVE happy endings – see our PPAR alumni here.
